Dr. Plewes graduated UBC Medical School in 1984 and completed a Rotating Internship at Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver in 1984. He finished his General Surgery Residency at Vancouver General Hospital and was certified in 1990 as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgery specializing in general surgery. Colorectal Fellowship training was completed in Dallas, Texas in 1991 with subsequent successful completion of American Board of Surgery examinations (1991) and American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery examinations (1994).

Dr. Plewes was a full-time Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario from 1991 to 1999, then a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery for the University of Alberta, Edmonton from 1999 to present. He works at the Royal Alexandra Hospital as a General and Colorectal Surgeon and previously as Chief of General Surgery. Currently he is Regional Lead in colorectal surgery.

Dr. Plewes is an avid golfer and traveler. He is married with two adult children all of whom work in the health care field.
