The Medical Panels Office (MPO) is an independent agency of the Government of Alberta.
Legislation and Regulations
Section 46.2(1) and (7) of the Workers’ Compensation Act (the Act) establishes and provides the authority for the MPO. The Act also provides authority to the Medical Panels Commissioner and its employees to carry out their work, in accordance with the Public Service Act. This includes administering the Medical Panel process, which involves:
- coordinating the referral of medical issues and matters to Medical Panels.
- developing and implementing processes to ensure the timely completion of Medical Panel reviews and reports.
- establishing a physician roster.
- ensuring the efficient operation and management of the MPO and any other functions prescribed in the regulations.
The Medical Panels Regulation provides further details about the Medical Panels Commissioner and Office.
A Mandate and Roles document is under development in accordance with the Alberta Public Agencies Governance Act.
Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act (PSCTA)
The Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act (PSCTA) was passed in November 2015 to increase transparency of compensation paid to a wide variety of public sector employees and appointees.
