Dr. Chris de Gara, MB MS FRCS (Ed, Eng and C) FACS FFSted
Dr. Chris de Gara is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta. He recently retired from clinical and academic practice after 40 years as a doctor – 21 of them spent in Alberta.
He studied medicine and surgery in the United Kingdom, and came to Canada as a research fellow in 1983. He returned to the United Kingdom to complete thesis work, but couldn’t resist Canada, where he completed further surgical and oncology training before becoming an assistant professor of surgery at McMaster in Hamilton, Ontario.
In 1997, Dr. de Gara came to Alberta as Division Director of General Surgery, with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, and the Director of Surgical Oncology at the Cross Cancer Institute, practicing out of the Royal Alexandra Hospital. He has held various leadership positions including Associate Dean Continuous Professional Learning, Provost Fellow, University Senator and President of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons.
In 2011, he retooled and became a bariatric surgeon, establishing the only dedicated Bariatric Surgery Revision Clinic in North America.
Dr. de Gara has written over 100 peer reviewed publications on various topics including cancer surgery, obesity and surgical education.
Dr. de Gara was appointed as Medical Panels Commissioner effective June 1, 2018.
